Poetry of Light
Poetry of Light is Rebekka Rafnsdóttir’s graduation film from The New School. Poetic, visual, and deeply personal, the film explores different ways of seeing—not only how we perceive the world, but how memory, emotion, and experience shape what becomes visible to us.
Through a collection of images gathered over several years, Rebekka invites us into her inner landscape. Personal stories and fragments of lived experience are woven together with philosophical reflections, forming an intimate portrait of the filmmaker’s evolving worldview. The camera becomes a way of thinking: observing light, movement, faces, places, and fleeting moments that might otherwise disappear unnoticed.
The film also reflects on probability and coincidence. Rebekka considers how the vectors of our lives may seem to move independently, following separate paths through time and space, only to intersect in unexpected ways. What first appears fragmented gradually reveals a hidden relationship, as distant experiences, people, and moments become connected within a larger pattern.
Rather than offering a fixed narrative, Poetry of Light unfolds like a visual diary or a stream of consciousness. Images speak to one another across time, creating new meanings through their proximity. The personal becomes universal, and ordinary moments are transformed through attention.
The film asks what it truly means to see—and whether seeing is ever separate from remembering, imagining, and feeling. Poetry of Light is ultimately a meditation on perception, chance, and interconnectedness: on the possibility that the seemingly separate paths of our lives may, in the end, all belong to the same unfolding composition.
