Cottonwood film

Cottonwood NYC is a progressive learning community based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Created for homeschooling families with children between the ages of five and fourteen, Cottonwood offers an alternative to conventional schooling—one rooted in curiosity, trust, creativity, and meaningful connection.

At Cottonwood, children are viewed as naturally curious and capable of shaping their own learning. Rather than following a single standardized path, learners develop academic skills at their own pace while exploring subjects through self-directed projects, long-term collaborative work, creative studios, classes, and field experiences. Their interests and passions are treated as essential starting points for discovery.

Community is central to the Cottonwood philosophy. Young people learn to care for themselves, one another, and the spaces they share. They are encouraged to become curious, kind, responsible, and self-aware participants in their community. Learning extends beyond the classroom into the cultural and natural landscape of New York City, as well as into collaborations with other microschools around the world.

Through education, art, play, travel, and hands-on experience, Cottonwood seeks to reimagine what learning can be: personal, joyful, inclusive, and deeply connected to life.

A film exploring Cottonwood and its unique approach to learning is scheduled for release in 2027.
